It was so nice to get home after last night’s shift. Sarah had made me breakfast, setting it on the table as soon as I came in. It was unhealthy but tasted awesome, and I was starved so I ate every bit of it. We chatted a bit, and then I went upstairs, showered off, and walked over to the bed to find Sarah waiting for me, naked and ready! An hour later, sweaty and emptied, I was ready for a day’s sleep to prepare for my night shift tonight. Today, I felt like I had a full day off because I slept a little less than normal, and we spent the evening before my shift laying on the couch, watching Animal Planet.
Tonight started off busy and got even crazier as the evening wore on. Everyone shows up right after dinner with their abdominal pain and vomiting and fevers. People have gotten so fat these days that 300 pounds isn’t that much for the average patient. In fact, trying to get an I.V. is even harder on everyone since they weigh so much and come in all the time for every little ’emergency,’ using up all of their veins in the process. One patient who had ninety visits last year alone and some fifty cat scans and X-rays last year was begging the nurse for an I.V. to be placed in a foot vein. She was only 32 and weight 420 pounds. Fat chance of finding a normal vein in her. Her ‘medical conditions’ included arthritis, bipolar disorder, fibromyalgia, endometriosis, chronic back pain, and an assortment of other illnesses. Of course she was allergic to NSAIDS, meaning that we couldn’t us motrin or toradol or any aspirin-like medicines. She wanted dilaudid! She had close to 120 prescriptions of narcotics last year alone from forty different doctors according to the state opioid website. She had the meanest attitude but later apologized, saying her bipolar disorder made her have no manners. I personally think she had no manners since birth.
Late in the night, I had finally calmed down the department and went to the physician’s room when a knock at the door dragged me back out just as I had sat down. I was irritated at first until I opened the door and saw Ashley standing before me. She was in street clothes, and having gone out for the evening, she said she decided to stop by and see how I was doing. I stuttered all over myself. I wasn’t expecting her to visit. Next thing I knew, we were sitting down in my office for the next few hours, chatting away as I broke off periodically to see new patients. By 6 A.M., red eyed and yawning, she got up, walked over to me and kissed me. I slid my hand up her shirt, rubbing her soft skin as we locked lips. She was clearly in shape – her muscular build felt perfect as I slid my hands over all of it! Next thing I knew, she had knelt down in front of me, unzipped my pants, and worked me up until I finished. Unbelievable! What a great shift!
